Halal Ramen in a Competitive Town of Ebisu

Within 5-minuts walking distance from the Skywalk Exit of Ebisu station, the authentic ramen store Honolu can be found on the street along with cafes and small shops that are busy with female customers during the lunchtime. The store is named after the ambition of storeowner Satoshi Shimai to open a branch in Honolulu and to make the Japanese dish popular across the world.

Overseas Customers Before the Pandemic

The chicken used in the halal ramen is all sourced from halal-certified chicken farms and the grilled chicken gives juicy feels, even compared to grilled pork that are used in regular ramen. Likewise, soy sauce and noodles are also certified, but because there is no noodle manufacturer that received a halal certificate outside Tokyo, the restaurant still has a long way before expanding and opening nationwide.

Former Italian Restaurant Owner Turns to Chef

The Bangladeshi chef Mujahed responsible for cooking used to manage a halal Italian restaurant, but due to a bleak prospect of the restaurant that heavily relied on the inbound tourist, decided to move to Honolu. The delicate way the chef cooks and use spices for ground chicken stir fries and fried chicken call for white rice for those of us who crave the Japanese food.

Spicy Ramen for \1,080. The white color of the broth is coming naturally from chickens. As the broth lavishly uses the chicken bones while carefully skimming off the foam to keep down the smell, you can drink the entire bowl and still feel the appetite. There are also Coriander Ramen, Meat-Veggie Dumpling or more dishes that you would want to try out if you are visiting for dinner.

The pandemic caused a rapid decline in the demand for Muslim friendly restaurants, the chef manages to maintain the quality of food and the level of preparedness to cater for Muslims living in Japan by cooking the broth every morning and keeping the storage of spices. You can certainly feel the sincere attitude of the certified restaurant that has an ambition to popularize the halal food.
